Meeting to be held Tuesday on Howe Caverns casino proposal

A public hearing on the plan to build a casino at Howe Caverns will be held on Tuesday.

It will be in the Cobleskill-Richmondville auditorium from 7-9 p.m.

Last November, 51 percent of voters in the county were in favor of putting a casino in the Capital District.

Albany Diocese to celebrate ordination and installation of new bishop

ALBANY -- Parishioners in the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese are excited about the upcoming ordination and installation of a new bishop.

The ceremony kicks off Thursday afternoon at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany. Bishop-elect Edward Scharfenberger is set to become the 10th bishop since the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese began back in 1847.

Bishop Howard Hubbard has been bishop of the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese for the past 37 years.

"So for many of the people in the diocese, he's the only bishop they've ever known," said the Rev. Kenneth Doyle from the Parish of Mater Christi in Albany.

But come Thursday, the diocese will officially have a new bishop. The ordination and installation of Scharfenberger will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany in front of about 1,200 people.

Schoharie to join other communities in volunteer recognition

More than 1,000 mayors and town supervisors will honor local volunteers on April 1.

Among them – leaders from Schoharie Area Long Term Recovery, Mayor Avitabile from Middleburgh and Mayor Holmes from Cobleskill.

A luncheon for salt volunteers will be held at Middleburgh Reformed Church at noon that day.

SALT hosting Savor Schoharie

Sample cuisines from around the world without ever leaving Schoharie County. SALT is hosting Savor Schoharie with an international feast of flavors at several different locations.

The evening starts April 26 with a reception at the Schoharie Depot Lane Theatre at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $50. Proceeds benefit Schoharie Area Long Term Recovery.

Schoharie communities to meet and discuss flood funds

As Schoharie and surrounding communities continue their cleanup from storms including Irene and Lee, a meeting will be held to determine where some of the funding will go.

Funding for community reconstruction projects now totals $18 million.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 27 at St. Mark’s Lutheran church, 326 Main Street in Middleburgh.

The funds are part of the NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program.

Seminar to help homeowners affected by Irene, Lee

There is still help available for homeowners, impacted by Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee.

You may be eligible for funding from New York State, including reimbursement if you have already rebuilt your home.

A seminar will be held on Tuesday, March 4th at the Best Western in Cobleskill.

Local contractors are urged to attend to find out how they help with the reconstruction.

SALT hosting Fat Tuesday buffet

Enjoy some good food, while helping the continuing flood recovery efforts in Schoharie County.

Salt is hosting a Fat Tuesday buffet on March 4 at Fusion Community Church, 375 North Grand Street in Cobleskill.

The buffet is scheduled to go from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Traditional breakfast foods (pancake, eggs, bacon, omelets, etc.) Will be served.

The cost is $10 for adults, and $5 for kids 12 and under.

Prices for same day tickets are $13 for adults and $7 for kids 12 and under.
