NY state proposes letting jails shut law libraries

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York corrections officials have proposed letting local jails across the state close law libraries used by inmates.

The state Commission of Correction says that could save each jail about $5,000 a year, though the 63 jails would still have to preserve prisoner access rights to legal materials.

Schoharie County man charged with DWI after found in parents basement

SCHOHARIE – Police have arrested a man they found hiding in his parent’s basement after they say he left the scene of a personal injury accident.

According to New York State Police, 18-year-old Jared Landauer was found after troopers heard suspicious noises while interviewing his mother.

Police say Landauer was found to have a BAC of .13 percent. He was charged with DWI and several traffic violations including leaving the scene of an accident.

Hannaford teams with TOMRA to help charities

Hannaford teams with TOMRA to help charities

 

ALBANY – Beginning on April 8, customers who shop at Hannaford Supermarkets will have the chance to give back to their community when recycling.

Customers who return deposit valued bottles and cans at Hannaford locations is New York will have the option to donate the money to local charities.

The first beneficiary will be the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Northeastern New York.

The program will be offered at 22 Hannaford store throughout the Capital Region and Hudson Valley.

Customers can participate by either dropping off their bottles to a Greenback staff member or by pressing the option on one of the TOMRA reverse vending machines.

The program runs through May 31.

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (AP) - Beech-Nut Nutrition and Goya Foods Inc. are launching a new line of baby foods geared to the tastes of the Hispanic market that will be produced in Montgomery County.

The companies say they expect strong demand as the Hispanic population continues to grow in the U.S.

Missing Persons Day brings together families across NYS

Dozens of people from across the state gathered today to remember missing loved ones in Albany. The 12th annual Missing Persons Day brought families together at the New York State Museum. The event is organized by Doug and Mary Lyall, whose daughter disappeared in 1998.

Pictures of missing loved ones on display in one are of the state museum, this as relatives gathered for support and to reflect.

“Every single one of these people here have a different story and everyone of them have emotions,” emotions Mary Lyall says keep them up at night wondering and hoping one day their loved ones will be found.
